3825 | ROBERT COLEMAN, THE IMMIGRANT, OF MOBJACK BAY, GLOUCESTER COUNTY, VIRGINIA Robert Coleman, born 1620-1625 in England, died after May 1682 in Tindalls Point, Gloucester County, Virginia. Robert married Elizabeth Grizzell-Mott, daughter of William Grizzell, about 1650-1655 in Essex County, Virginia. Elizabeth Grizzell was born 1622-1630 in England. Robert came to America on March 2, 1638 as a headright of Thomas Symons, who received a grant of 250 acres for transporting 5 people from England to America. He landed at Upper Norfolk County in Virginia and eventually settled near Mobjack Bay in Gloucester County, Virginia. He acquired over 700 acres of land. Robert and Elizabeth Coleman had 6 children: Thomas, Robert, Joseph, Grizzell, Daniel and John. No evidence has been found in any Virginia records to indicate the year of Robert Coleman’s birth, but his birth year has traditionally been estimated as ca. 1622. Robert’s name first appeared in the records of the colony on a headright list from Upper Norfolk County on 2 Mar 1638. He was listed as a headright of Thomas Symons. Although the headright list was dated 1638, Robert was probably in the colony at least by 1637. The Coleman brothers made their way to York County before 1645. They may have traveled overland, but more likely went by boat. Virginia was a true wilderness in those days, heavily forested and occupied by Indians and wild animals. Traveling in small parties would have been safe enough by boat. Larger groups of settlers could travel overland with relative safety, depending on their number. York County is likely where the Coleman brothers met and married their wives. Settlers throughout the Virginia colony had crowded into York in anticipation of the eventual opening of Indian lands to the north. Neither Gloucester nor Lancaster counties were open for white settlement until 1649, and all three brothers appear to have been married by that year. York County is also where Robert Coleman became good friends with Thomas Ray, although the strong possibility exists that Thomas Ray was a cousin of the Colemans.

Abt. 1646, d. Bef. May 12, 1716) Robert Greene (son of Thomas Greene and Millicent Brown) was born Abt. 1646 in Green's Rest Plantation, Saint Mary's County, Maryland, and died Bef. May 12, 1716 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He married Mary Ann Boarman, daughter of William Boarman and Sarah Linle. Includes NotesNotes for Robert Greene: There are evidences of financial reverses during the life of Robert Green, one of which is the re-purchase of "Greene's Rest" by his father-in-law. The settlement of his estate does not prove a complete list of his children, but in 1709 Thomas Federick, of Prince George's County by his will devised his godsons, James and Thomas Green, each 100 acres of "Strife" and 200 acres to Mary Green. At the death of his widow, Mary Federick, the personal estate was to pass to Jane Green, Jr., Thomas Green and Elizabeth Green. In 1660 he was named as kinsman in the will of James Langworth, his guardian or trustee, according to the terms of his father's legal instrument of 1650, thought the relationship between the Green and Langworth families is not known. By an Act of the General Assembly of May June 1676, he received 1500 pounds tobacco for servies to the Province which are believe to have been for participation in an Indian expedition. Jerry L. Clark "Jerry L. Clark" 1037 South 680 West Provo, Utah 84601 1-801-374-5016 From records available the children of Robert Green and Mary Boarman appear to be: 1) Thomas Green born 1683 married Tecla Shircliff (parents William Shircliff and Mildred Thompson, Mildred married 2nd Thomas Green, bachelor son of Leonard Green the uncle of Tecla's husband) Tecla Green the wife of Thomas Green was a witness to the will of Alexander Hamilton. William and Patrick Hamilton, the sons of Elizabeth and Alexander Hamilton, witnessed the will of Thomas Green (30:842) on 8/7/1759. 2) Elizabeth Green born c 1684 married 1st 1702 Andrew Sympson, married 2nd 1708 Alexander Hamilton. 3)Mary Green married John Thompson. 4) Sarah Green married Patrick McAtee (Court K#2:149, 1721). 5) William Green born 12/28/1694, was one of the sureties with Elizabeth Hamilton in the settlement of the estate of Alexander Hamilton. Thomas Green, the father of Robert Green and grandfather of Elizabeth Green Hamilton, married 1st Ann Cox who had been a passenger like himself on the "Ark and Dove" voyage to America in 1634. Their marriage might have been the first Catholic marriage on Maryland soil. In 1643 Thomas Green married 2nd Millicent Browne. In 1647 he married 3rd Winifred Seybourne Harvey, widow of Nicholas. Robert Green born in 1646 was the son of Thomas and Millicent. Robert was born at "Green's Rest" the home plantation of his father in St. Mary's Co. MD. He gave a deposition in court which places his birth in 1646. R. Green married Mary Boarman (born c 1660) the daughter of Major William Boarman (born c 1630 in England, died 1709 in Charles Co., MD) and his 1st marriage Sarah (born c 1635 England and died c 1670 in MD). The records concerning Thomas Green and Major William Boarman would be a book itself. Both were staunch Catholics and leaders in the formation of the Province of Maryland. ======= Greene, Francis, Chas. Co., 16th Sept., 1706; 7th May, 1707. On February 24, 1648, Thomas Green gave one yearling heifer to his son Robert Green. This appeared in the Court and Testamentary Business of the Provincial Court and was signed as: Tho. Green. Thomas did the same for his other three sons. In 1666 Robert and his brothers; Leonard, and Francis Green were granted a 2400 acre tract called "Green's Inheritance". It appears that the tract was divided equally between the three brothers, each sharing 800 acres of the adjoining plantation. Robert's part of "Green's Inheritance" was located on the main road to Piscataway and Rowland Road. Robert also owned a plantation near Bryantown. It was located in Zachriah Swamp on Green's Run and adjoined Boarman's Manor. Robert Spillsbee Coleman's will of 1760 calls this building the "Scots Arm Tavern." An 1801 insurance policy shows this Tavern to be "105 feet long, one story in height except for the 24 feet next to the river which is two stories." The present house is in this location, is two stories high with an English basement. It is now the private home of Miss Mary Derieux, whose family has owned and lived here for over one hundred years.
