I John Thompson of the county of Mercer and state of Kentucky do hereby state on oath in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of congress entitled “ An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War”. That I did in the year 1776 enlist in the Virginia State Troops and was stationed in Tygart Valley and was afterwards marched to Winchester in said state. At which place in April 1777 I enlisted in the 12th Virginia Reg’t on the continental establishment for the term of three years in the company commanded by Capt. Michael Bowyer, which said Reg’t was at that time commanded by Col. James Wood. That I faithfully served as a regular soldier during the Revolutionary War during the said term of three years and was honorably discharged and then again reenlisted for and during the war in the same company of Reg’t at Boundbrook in New Jersey. That I was after detached on duty & was in Buford’s defeat. I was also in the Battle of Brandywine & Germantown and was with Gen. Morgan in Detachment under Capt. Wallace when he beat Tarleton at the Battle of Cowpens. That I was again honorably discharged at Salisbury in the state of North Carolina. That I was attached to Gen. Scott’s Brigade. I also state that I am now old being sixty years of age and so reduced in circumstances that I stand in need of the assistance of my country for support. I also release all other pensions given under my hand this 9 June 1819.
