…and died July 6, 1832. He was never married. This Robert Edward Coleman was a large landowner in Mercer County and owned many slaves. He was murdered by two of his slaves and the story of the killing was published in a Lexington newspaper, in 1832. The story goes that Robert Edward was returning home one night and met the two slaves on the road. He asked them why they were out so late at night and they told him one of the women slaves had run away and they were looking for her. However, they followed on after their master and murdered him. It was believed that a Northern overseer of Robert’s farm had hired the slaves to kill his employer. The hired man believed that Robert Coleman carried a lot of money. It was told that the hired man gave the slaves a few dollars, and the money belt and watch that Robert Coleman was carrying. The hired man took most of the money and a diamond ring and left the Country. The slaves were left to face the charge of murder. In those days, the word of a slave meant nothing. So they were hanged for the crime. The above account of the murder was published in a Lexington, Kentucky newspaper in 1832.
