Emanuel Berkowitz , 81, of Seal Beach, Calif, formerly of mattoon, died in Seal Beach Tuesday. He was the brother of Chief Circuit Judge Jacob Berkowitz of Mattoon.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm Sunday in Schillings Funeral Home with Rabbi Don Gerber officiating. Burial will be in Dodge Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9pm Saturday at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be conducted by Lawrence Riddle American Ledion Post 88.

Mr. Berkowitz was born June 11, 1890 in Sheboygan, Wis, the son of Nathan and Esther Goldberg Berkowtitz. He married Evelyn Traxler June 27, 1920 in Milwaukee, Wis. She died June 27, 1987. He married Frances Jarett May 30, 1968, in San Pedro, Cal. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Snyder of San Pedro, Ca, Mrs. Marian Mayer of Mobile, Ala, and Mrs. Esther Ann Swidler of Forrest Hills, NY; one brother, Judge Berkowitz of Mattoon, three sisters, Miss Molly Berkowitz and Miss Dorothy Berkowitz, both of Mattoon, and Mrs. Joseph (Freda) Euchtman of Baltimore, Md; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Berkowitz came to Mattoon in 1906 and was president of N Berkowitz and Sons produce Co. in Mattoon until it was dissolved and he retired in 1956. He moved to California in 1962.

A veteran of World War 1, Mr. Berkowitz was a member of the Mattoon, American Legion Post and 40 & 8. He was a member of Mattoon Lodge 260 AF and AM, Consistory, Springfield Shrine, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Long Beach (Calif) Elks Club.

Mr Berkowitz was appointed in 1940 to serve on the West Side Coles County Selective Service Local Board 2 in Mattoon and in 1948 was transferred to Local Board 97, covering the entire county. He resigned from the draft board in 1962. He was presented a citation and pin in recognition of his 20 years of service with the Coles County Selective Service Board at a state Selective Service meeting in Springfield in March 1962.
